Safety Shoes: Treated Leather, Chemtech Microfiber or Waterproof Membrane – Which One Should You Choose?

With the rainy season approaching, choosing the right safety footwear becomes essential. Treated leather, waterproof membrane, or Chemtech microfiber: each material offers distinct advantages depending on your work environment and your needs for comfort, protection, and durability.


1. Materials and Protection

Treated Leather (H2O Seal)
High-quality natural leather can be treated to repel water. Sealed seams prevent droplets from seeping in while maintaining the appearance of the leather for longer. This type of footwear is well suited for workers alternating between indoor and outdoor environments, with moderate exposure to moisture.

Waterproof Membrane (Drylock and Sympatex)
Boots with a waterproof membrane add an extra layer of water protection, keeping feet dry even in very wet conditions. They are ideal for muddy environments or frequent exposure to water. All STC models with a waterproof membrane also feature treated leather for enhanced durability.

Chemtech Microfiber
Used in some STC models, Chemtech microfiber is a lightweight, flexible, and durable vegan synthetic material. It can be treated to become waterproof, offering performance comparable to leather. With no animal components, it is an excellent alternative for workers looking for technical footwear that is durable and easy to maintain.


2. Breathability and Comfort

Treated leather offers superior breathability compared to membranes, allowing better ventilation and greater comfort during long workdays. It is recommended for workers occasionally exposed to water.

Waterproof membranes, however, vary in terms of breathability levels:

  • Drylock I: waterproof

  • Drylock II: waterproof and breathable

  • Drylock III / Drylock Fire / Sympatex: waterproof, breathable, and resistant to pathogens

These membranes allow water vapor to escape, reducing excessive sweating. They are particularly suitable for outdoor workers or emergency services.

Chemtech microfiber, thanks to its lightweight structure, also provides good breathability. It combines comfort and protection, even in damp environments.


3. Care and Durability

Treated Leather: requires regular cleaning and proper drying. Applying wax helps maintain its suppleness and appearance. The use of waterproofing sprays is not recommended.

Waterproof Membrane: requires minimal care. Wiping with a damp cloth and mild soap is sufficient. Occasional waxing of the outer leather helps extend its lifespan.

Chemtech Microfiber: very easy to maintain. Simple cleaning with water is enough. No special treatment required.

Note that the performance of all these materials can decrease over time, especially after repeated bending and flexing.


4. PU Utility Boots: The Solution for Very Wet Environments

For workers frequently and continuously exposed to water — such as on outdoor construction sites, in food processing plants, or in agriculture — polyurethane (PU) utility boots can be an essential solution. They are designed to provide complete waterproofing and can be equipped with a protective toe cap and slip-resistant sole. Their one-piece construction prevents any water infiltration, even after long hours of exposure. While they are less breathable than leather or microfiber boots, they provide reliable and durable protection in the toughest environments.
