SAFETY FOOTWEAR: WATER-REPELLENT LEATHER OR WATERPROOF MEMBRANE, WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE?
With the arrival of the rainy season, you're wondering which type of safety boots to choose: water-repellent leather or waterproof membrane? The choice depends on a number of factors, including the type of use and the work environment.
1. Materials and protection
Water-repellent leather (H2O Seal): High-quality natural leather is specially treated to repel water, with sealed seams to prevent droplets from penetrating. This treatment helps the leather retain its appearance longer. If you work both indoors and outdoors and are not often exposed to water, water-repellent leather is a good option.
Waterproof membrane (Drylock and Sympatex): These boots feature an extra layer that acts as a barrier against water, keeping your feet dry even in very wet conditions. They're ideal for muddy environments or frequent exposure to water. All STC waterproof membrane footwear also feature water-repellent leather for added durability.
2. Breathability and comfort
Although water-repellent leather is not as waterproof as a membrane, it offers greater breathability, allowing optimal ventilation and keeping feet cool. It's ideal for workers seeking comfort and less frequent exposure to water.
Boots with a waterproof membrane, on the other hand, offer enhanced waterproofing. Breathability varies according to membrane type:
- Waterproof (e.g. Drylock I)
- Waterproof and breathable (e.g. Drylock II)
- Waterproof, breathable and pathogen-resistant (e.g. Drylock III, Drylock Fire, Sympatex)
Breathable membranes allow water vapor to escape, preventing excessive perspiration and discomfort. They are ideal for workers regularly exposed to water or working outdoors. Pathogen-resistant membranes offer additional protection against biological contaminants, especially for emergency services such as police and ambulance.
3. Care and durability
Footwear made from water-repellent leather (H2O Seal) are hard-wearing and easy to care. Daily cleaning and proper drying will extend their lifespan. Although it is not recommended to apply waterproofing products, the use of wax maintains the flexibility and appearance of the leather.
Boots with waterproof membranes require less maintenance. The inner membrane resists moisture, ensuring long-lasting protection. Simple cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap, plus an occasional application of wax, is all that's needed to preserve their quality.
Note that, over time, the performance of water-repellent leather or waterproof membrane may diminish, especially after repeated flexing.
In summary
- For versatile, highly breathable, easy-to-clean footwear with limited exposure to water, opt for water-repellent leather.
- For demanding environments (wet work sites, rainy days), choose a boot with a waterproof membrane.
- If you work in the emergency services, look for a footwear with a waterproof, breathable, pathogen-resistant membrane.
- For very damp environments with regular exposure to water, choose a utilitarian safety boot (e.g. PU or rubber rain boots with toe cap and protective sole).
